![]() ![]() there's no reason to rush into ownership. it's one of those "you don't know what you don't know" situations. I highly, highly advise to slow down, take lessons, and let a trusted trainer guide you into leasing and eventual ownership. i know a lot - but keeping them at home is a whole different ballpark (and not to mention, you should not keep a horse alone, so you'd be buying a minimal of two horses). I've owned horses for almost 20 years now i still wouldn't want the responsibility or feel sufficiently prepared to have a horse on my own property. I'm not trying to sound condescending here i get that you think you have a lot of experience by shadowing someone for a few years, but shadowing someone for a short amount of time is not really sufficient, especially if you're planning on keeping the horse at home, which it sounds like you are. It would be a lot safer option to first take lessons, and then start leasing a horse later on when you're comfortable and able. I'm not saying this to be a downer, but if you do not have a lot of experience riding, it may be best to wait on purchasing a horse. I could easily be overthinking this super early, we are currently working on fixing the pen and building a shelter/barn for them to have some cover from the elements so it will likely be a couple months before I start seriously looking into purchasing one! I would love to work with someone 1:1 but that is very hard to come by in my area so I am turning here for help lol. I am trying to do heavy research before hand so that I have the right amount of finances planned. That said the only experience riding I have is with friends horses over the years (I am looking into getting more structured lessons soon), but I guess my main question is how to learn what equipment I actually need to fit me and the horse and determining amounts of food needed. I have a lot of experience with grooming and feeding and basic health from shadowing a couple people over the last few years, but it never progressed to more than just daily care. ![]()
